This week I ran a probation review and the person said to me: "You've got a very high bar."
It made me feel a bit crap.
Yes, I do have a high bar- but here's the thing: it's an intention, not an expectation. My aim is to help people rise, not to make them feel like they'll never reach the top.
My dad did a speech at my wedding and it is known by my friends as "the roast" because while it had everyone in stitches, it was not your normal complimentary "doesn't my daughter look lovely and I'm quite proud of her" vibe. He has a high bar, he's a man of the military, and that's absolutely been good for me- but the idea that someone thinks I'm holding them to something unachievable, it felt… uncomfortable. More on that later.
