Ensuring a positive exit experience is crucial for both the departing employee and the business (remember, everyone NOT leaving gets to see a glimpse into the future of how they might be treated upon departure). Here's why it matters and how to do it right:
1. Acknowledge their contributions. Make sure to highlight and celebrate the achievements and contributions they've made. This shows appreciation and reinforces their value, but more than that, it's just a bloody nice human thing to do. If you can’t think of any, ask around- there’s always something.
2. Craft a personal farewell. Organize a genuine send-off that resonates with the person. This could be a small gathering or a heartfelt message- it's all about making them feel special and remembered. My big tip here, however, is to ask the person what THEY want. There have been jobs when I’ve wanted to disappear into the background, and some where I’m fine with the speech and the handshake- it's up to them.
3. Facilitate a smooth handoff. FACT: no one in the history of the world has said “oh wow, this handover is perfect and has covered everything”. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. This not only helps the team adjust but also shows that you respect their work and want to maintain the quality of their contributions.
4. Maintain open communication. Keep the lines open for future opportunities. Let them know they're welcome to return, fostering a network that values their ongoing journey; you never know what will play out in the future (my boss is someone that was my peer 10 years ago, and I wouldn’t change it for the world).
5. Emphasize their legacy. Let them know how their influence will continue to ripple through the team, instilling a sense of lasting impact and legacy.
